Makaton is a language programme that uses signs and picture symbols to support spoken communication. The Makaton Charity develops resources and training, as well as supporting tutors like me to train others.
Always used along with speech, Makaton is a flexible way of communicating that can be adapted to meet each user’s needs, from babies to adults. It can help with understanding spoken and written language, and provide a means of expression for those who have difficulty talking.
The Makaton Charity estimates that over 1 million people in the UK use Makaton signs and symbols. Since it was first developed in the 1970s, Makaton’s popularity and profile has grown and grown. Thanks to the wonderful work of the Makaton Charity, the CBeebies show Something Special, and high-profile media moments like the World Down Syndrome Day Carpool Karaoke video, Makaton is more widely known and used than ever.
